The short of it

Hiccup has a few hidden Easter eggs. Shake your phone for about three seconds on the Us screen and your person's phone buzzes with a glowing ball of liquid plasma. Hold the big picture for three seconds to send a heartbeat. Cover the top of your phone for three seconds to send a pocket hug. Send in the same minute as your person and sparks burst on both screens. Send 25 hiccups to the same person in a day and the 26th onward get glitter behind them.

Some Easter eggs are found, not told

Most of Hiccup is easy to see. You pick a mood, you tap Send, and a small hello travels to the person you miss. But we hid a few Easter eggs, without a button and without a menu, because some of the nicest moments are the ones you stumble on.

If you have found this page, you are one of the curious ones. Here is the whole egg hunt. Try them with someone you love, and watch their face.

The shake: a buzz that travels

Open the Us screen, hold your phone, and shake it properly for about three seconds. A ball of glowing blue liquid plasma starts to swell on your screen, and it keeps growing for as long as you shake.

When the three seconds are done, it leaves. Your person gets a hiccup that is only that glowing ball, no character at all, and their phone gives a long, jerky buzz of about three seconds, even if their app is closed. It is the closest thing to tapping someone on the shoulder from another city.

If someone would rather not feel it, they can switch it off in Settings, under Calm and privacy, with Special vibrations.

On their phone it arrives as just the glowing ball.

The heartbeat: hold the picture

On the Us screen, press and hold the big picture with one finger, and keep still for three seconds. A heart swells under your finger. When it is done, it goes to your person as a heartbeat, and their phone answers with a soft lub dub, lub dub that they can feel in their hand.

A quick tap does nothing, so you will not send it by accident.

They get a heartbeat they can see and feel.

The pocket hug: cover the top of your phone

Most Android phones have a tiny sensor near the earpiece. It is the one that turns the screen off when you hold the phone to your ear. Hiccup can feel it too.

With the Us screen open, cover the top of your phone with your palm, or hold it close against your chest, for three seconds. A warm glow rises, and your person's phone gives a slow vibration that swells and fades, like a hug that takes its time.

Honestly, this one depends on the phone: if yours has no such sensor, there is nothing to cover.

Sparks when you both send in the same minute

You think of them, and in the same minute they think of you. When both of you send a hiccup within the same minute, little sparks burst across both screens at once. No hearts this time, just a small bright shower to say: we reached for each other together.

Glitter after the twenty-fifth

Some days you simply cannot stop. If you send the same person 25 hiccups in one day, the 26th and every one after it gets a little glitter behind it, on both phones. The count starts again the next morning.

It is our way of noticing a day when someone was on your mind a lot.

The fine print, kindly

Now go and find them

Pick someone. Open Hiccup. Shake, hold, cover, or just send two hiccups at the same moment and see what happens. Then tell them to look for the rest. An Easter egg is only half the fun until you show someone else.
